The Friends of the Point Roberts Library close in on their funding goal

By Judy Ross

October’s Harvest Faire raised another $900 for the new library, thanks to the shoppers, our Friends of the Point Roberts Library (FOPRL) workers (Steve, Don, Barb, Ann, Judith, Rose, Ed, Jane and David) and to all of Jessica McVey’s work to make the event happen. We had four different revenue streams (books, collectibles, table fees and baked goods) and the clear winner was the cakes, cookies and pies table. Point Roberts bakers are not only generous but very good at their work. Much thanks to them all.

Also, at the meeting of the FOPRL Support Committee (which is a different committee from the fundraising committee because they raise funds for ongoing library needs like kids reading programs, puppet shows and library magazine subscriptions), the committee provided $4,000 of their funds to the new library fund. Over the past four years of active new library fundraising, the support group, led by Barb Wayland, has now reached Founder’s Group status, and our anonymous donor will also match this last donation.

We’ve also received a half-dozen completed pledges this past month, as well as some new donations and with all that, we’re so close to the final goal it takes my breath away.

Having said that, I’m now going to pull back a little, well advised by the time-proven adage that there’s many a slip between the cup and the lip. We have $509,000 clearly in hand, and we have enough pledges to get us within a few thousand dollars of our total goal. I think those pledges will come through (they’re not due until the end of the year), and I believe some other donations will make up any shortfalls, but no celebrations yet – not until it’s all in the bank.

One of those other donations will be Lucy Williams’ gift of a concert on Sunday, November 22, 4 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church featuring the Bergamasca Recorders, all proceeds to the new library. I hope to see you there. I hope to see you next year in the new library. What a community of library supporters we have turned out to be!

(To donate, make your check payable to FOPRL. Please drop it off at the library or mail to FOPRL, P.O. Box 970, Point Roberts, 98281.)
