Dollars for Scholars fundraising campaign gets underway

Spring is here and with it the annual drive to raise money for the Point Roberts Dollars for Scholars, a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides local students with financial and academic assistance to help them pursue higher education.

Last year DFS awarded $6,500 to nine local students. “We’re very proud of our first efforts,” says Davea Fisher. “This year, however, we’re anticipating more applications, so we need to raise even more money.” “We’re hoping to give scholarships to four groups,” Joan Roberts adds, “graduating high school students, on-going college students, adults returning to college, and students in high school or grade school attending educational enrichment programs.”

One way money will be raised is the Book and Bake Sale held on Saturday, March 30 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. outside the International Marketplace. Chair Margaret Moras hopes the community will support this event or mail tax deductible donations to Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 2168, Point Roberts, WA 98281.

“Applications for DFS scholarships,” Kitty Doyle notes, “are available at Blaine high school career center, the Blue Heron Gallery, and Brewsters. The deadline for submitting the application is April 12. Students who want help completing their application should call Davea Fisher at 945-0890 to arrange for assistance.”.
