We’re jazzed

By Meg Olson

Dick Kensett is forging into the boating season as Point Roberts’ new yacht broker. Kensett has taken over yacht sales at Westwind Marine, after John Russo and Diamond Yachts moved to Blaine Harbor.

Kensett has spent most of his life on the water, working and playing. A retired captain with the Canadian Navy after 22 years of service, he started a second career managing information systems for the Canadian coast guard, retiring 18 years later. He now spends most of the year living on his 48' CHB power boat Jazz, moored in the Point Roberts Marina.

Jazz is Kensett’s first power boat, and comes after 30 years of owning half a dozen sailboats ranging from 30 to 50 feet. “I bring a lot of expertise to the business, and a lot of integrity,” Kensett said. Selling yachts is a good match for his other business venture – teaching practical skills to bring boat owners up to standards being developed by U.S. and Canadian authorities that are destined to become requirements. “It’s something I always wanted to do that keeps me connected to the boating community,” he said.

The inventory of yachts for sale is growing at Westwind Marine, but Kensett said they’re always looking for more. “We’re working on developing our inventory,” he said. “I’m shy on sailboats right now but I’ve got four big power boats.”

Yacht sales are only part of the package at Westwind Marine. The marina’s boat yard and chandlery can provide haul-outs, mechanical and structural surveys for prospective buyers and sellers.
