Scout Jamboree

By Clay Ambrose

On March 15-17, the scouts and leaders of 12th Central Surrey Scout Troop held their first Mini International Scout Jamboree at Lighthouse Marine Park. This is the third year they have had a camping trip. This year the scouts decided that they wanted a more grand event, so scout troops from British Columbia and Washington were invited to attend this event, which will be an annual event.

Mother Nature did not want to co-operate and the weather was very cold and wet, with very high winds blowing. Despite below freezing temperatures, the scouts and leaders indicated that they had a great time.
Many of the events planned were late starting because of the cold, windy weather. There were some events that did not happen at all because the organizations whom we were hoping could provide teachers were unable to do so.

There were over 230 scouts and leaders present. Many who had planned to attend were unable to do so because of the threat of snow and the long distances they had to travel.

The main event was the construction of a trail in Monument Park. The park manager, Ben VanBuskirk and the leaders of the 12th Central Surrey Troop have organized a five-year plan to work on the trail during the jamborees. The trail will benefit citizens of both countries. By the end of this project in 2006, there should even be a walkway from the park down to the beautiful beach.

Ranger Ben was exceptionally pleased with the work done on the trail. Scouter Bob Carver and scouter Ben Dobranawski each accepted the challenge and volunteered to engineer the trail structure. They spent the entire Saturday organizing and supervising the scouts who were there to do their part of the trail building. Each scout unit was put on a schedule so that there would be just the right number of scouts and leaders working at one time. There were usually around 20 scouts and leaders every hour.
This is stage one of five stages of the trail structure in Monument Park. We ask that everyone in the community on both sides of the border come by and hike the trail to see what is being done.

Some of the events of the jamboree included waggle carving, archery, fly tieing, moccasin making, slingshot shooting, knife safety, silkscreening and just plain having lots of fun.

There were many merchants who sponsored this event by donating needed items: Tsawwassen Sign Shoppe, Safeway, International Marketplace in Point Roberts, Surrey Super Store, and Hardware Sales in Bellingham. We give our great thanks for their support and urge others to shop at their shops.

Well, the plans are now being made for an even greater mini jamboree for next year. Next year, we will be inviting scouts and scouters from Alaska, Yukon Territory, B.C. Oregon, California, and Mexico.

If you or your organization wish to sponsor or provide an event for next year, call 604/788-6768 and volunteer. We will be seeking the donation of several drumels and scroll saws for next year.

Children of scout age, 11-16 who wish to join 12th Central Surrey Troop may do so by calling 604/788-6768. Girls are welcome to join our troops.
Our next event is our 10-day trip to sunny southern California, which includes high mountain (8,100 foot elevation) camping, hiking, cave and waterfall exploring, and a trip to Disneyland, and Raging Waters Fun Park.
