Flowers By The Sea 2002

2002 – The tenth anniversary of the All Point Bulletin’s Flowers By The Sea contest. It seemed hard to believe, said former CBC Canadian Gardener Bob Switzer who has judged all ten year’s worth.

“Looking back,” said Bob, “a great change has come about in Point Roberts, thanks to a little old lady who wrote gardening columns, a funny little German who has finally retired from the nursery business and hundreds of descendants from the original Icelandic settlers who first brought their seeds and sowed the ground.” Philosophizing done, Bob, with the able help of his wife Joley, turned to the task of judging this year’s fine crop of entrants.

First place went to Peter Allard’s garden on Edwards Drive, designed by Glen Hickey. “Incredibly peaceful and tranquil,” described Bob, “the floating house of Point Roberts,” referring to the waterfall and fish-filled moat surrounding the side and entrance to the house. “Incredibly understated, exquisite garden design, good taste and imagination.”
Second place was snapped up by Leila Marie Sourati on Ross and Boundary roads. “An extremely tasteful blending of boulevard and interior garden,” said Bob, “Both sides blend together, it’s the best example of this we’ve ever seen.” Following the music and the path, Bob discovered “A beautiful corner, just lovely for a backyard feature.”

Continuing a two-year streak, Ralph Schnorr on Holiday Lane pulled down the number three spot. “This is the quiet backyard,” proclaimed Bob, “very, very lush and old-fashioned. It has peaches, apples, pears, grapes, raspberries, blackberries – it’s a tactile garden. There’s no place better on a hot summer day to enjoy a glass of Ralph’s potato champagne!”
