AROUND THE POINT

There’s a new face at the Point Roberts post office, and for now, he’s the boss. Don Stanfill is the interim “officer in charge” after the December 31 retirement of Dean Nelson. Nelson, who had been the Point Roberts postmaster for 20 years, has relocated to Custer after his retirement.

Point Roberts water commissioners went with experience and chose engineers from Hammond Collier Wade and Livingstone, district engineers since the 1070s, to draw up a sewer facilities plan for Point Roberts.
The Hammond Collier Wade and Livingstone proposal was chosen from 7 applications for the $52,000 job, which is 80 percent funded by a U.S. Forestry Service rural infrastructure grant.

Terms of the grant give the engineers a year to finish the job, which will look at three options for a sewer collection system on the Point and evaluate the economic feasibility of building a that system and a treatment plant. The study will also determine which areas of the Point should be served by a sewer.

The following Point Roberts residents were awarded diplomas from Western Washington University at the conclusion of summer quarter, 2001.
Edmund Alexander (BA); John LeBrun (MED).

Blaine school district will hold its first student showcase fair highlighting the cream of creativity from all schools in the district.

On February 6 each school will display projects ranging from class science experiments and collections to individual creations like a piece of writing or a painting. The projects could be something created in class or something worked on independently at home – the only criteria is that the students have created something they’re proud of and want to share with their community.

At Point Roberts primary the fair will be from 1 to 4 p.m. In Blaine the primary school and high school showcases will be at the schools from 3 to 6 p.m., with the elementary showcase running from 2 to 4 p.m. The middle school showcase will be held later this year.
