Sheriff's Report

February 2002

U.S. Representative Rick Larsen certainly got an earful from Point Roberts students traveling on the bus to Blaine January 10. Larsen wanted to experience for himself the hassles of border crossing.
.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going Things are a little slow on the Point these days. The Breakers is closed, leaving rock and roll pilgrims to stand in the empty lot with their kids and mourn the passing of the good old days. Stunned regulars of TJs Restaurant and Gambling Bar faced a closed sign on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the first time in memory.
Residents to get a chance to question border officials U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service bosses from Seattle are coming to Point Roberts this month to talk with local business owners about steps the agency can take to make keep traffic moving across the border and make it easier for Point Roberts residents to get to the rest of the United States.
Even the plants get IDed now There will be a few more hoops to jump through for gardeners who want to buy their plants in Canada. New federal rules prohibit any live plants, bulbs and seeds from crossing the border without a bill of clean health.

TRAVEL THE VANISHING SNOWS
OF KILIMANJARO “Poli Polindio mwendo, Mr. Bob” - ‘Slow and steady wins the race.’ Late in the afternoon of April 3, Joseph, my Tanzanian guide, urged me along the top of Kilimanjaro’s snowcap. The sun fades towards the Serengeti plains three miles below. In a few minutes we will reach the top of Africa!
