Point
Roberts Parks & Recreation District
By
David Niles
The Point Roberts (PR) Parks District #1 was created by the residents
of the Point who recognized organized recreational opportunities
and a community center for local assembly would enhance a sense
of community. As well as always keeping an eye out and evaluating
new program ideas, it is our primary responsibility to administer
our ongoing community programs and facilities.
Toward this end, Baker Field, adjacent to the PR primary school,
offers a multi-purpose sports field that includes two baseball
diamonds, bleachers and restroom facilities.
Our popular PR community center facility on Gulf Road provides
space for our seniors program, community meetings, a polling station,
a permanent home for our local branch of the Whatcom County library
and a rec room with card tables and now two full-size
pool tables. The board would like to thank Tod and Irene Manrell
for their recent donation of our second full size pool table to
our center.
This past summer, Kelli Madsen, again the program coordinator,
continued to improve our successful five-week summer program.
Kelli and our board are indebted to Tonja Stuart, Neal Teutsch,
Lisel Campbell, Pam Sim, and Ryan Lopez for their energetic assistance
to ensure the programs success.
Once again, the series of field trips to the Vancouver Aquarium,
the Space Center, Science World, an animal petting farm, Splashdown
Park and of course Irenes barbecue at her home highlighted
our popular program.
Your PR parks board continues our commitment and remain the charter
organization of our local Boy Scout Troop #45 and girls
scouting program that meet regularly through the school year at
the community center.
To keep things running smoothly at the community center, we would
like to thank the Brady Bunch for handling the weekly
building maintenance, Jesse Lofquist whom we rely on for major
repairs and Lynn VanBuskirk, our reliable parks board secretary.
Your PR Parks board of commissioners for this year were chairperson
Irene Waters, Shelley Damewood, Bev Griffith, Tom Hollett, and
Dave Niles..
