Large numbers of scouts
expected to descend upon the Point

Hordes of Boy Scouts will descend on Lighthouse Marine Park in March for an international scout jamboree.

The event is a mini-jamboree, said organizer Clay Ambrose from the 12th central Surrey scout troop, which means they expect up to 500 scouts from B.C. and Washington. Three B.C. troops are already signed up and Ambrose said he hopes the word will spread. “We’d like to attract more scouts from Washington,” he said.

“We’ve arranged for three quarters of the park to use and part of the adjacent airport runway for our archery events,” Ambrose said. The list of events for the three-day jamboree is a long one: Dutch oven cooking, moccasin making, silkscreening and more. Some events, such as making your own commemorative jamboree shirt, will have a small fee for materials.

Participating scout troops will pay for their campsites with elbow grease. “Our fee will be a project building some trails in Monument Park,” Ambrose said. Working on the trails is required for all participating scouts. The park, which covers both sides of the road at the north west corner of Point Roberts, belongs to county parks but is not yet developed.

Ambrose said they hope to make the trail building a five-year project. “We hope eventually to have a trail system on both sides of the road and a trail down to the beach,” he said.
