IN REVIEW
Point
Roberts Registered Voters
By Tom
Hollett
This past year has primarily been a period of transformation and
restructuring for the Point Roberts Registered Voters Association.
After our annual general meeting, when a new slate of directors
were added to the board and the subsequent resignation of the
remainder of the existing members, the new board of the PRRVA
had its hands full reorganizing, filling our vacancies, and deciding
on goals for the coming year.
In one sense, it has been more of a year of what has not happened,
rather than what has. The following is a short list of some things
the PRRVA has not done this year: 1. We have not created conflicts
between Canadians and U.S. residents, over such things as RVs,
sewers, or other politically volatile issues in Point Roberts.
2. We have not threatened any local businesses with boycotts over
stands differing from our own political positions. 3. We have
not wasted taxpayers money by engaging in frivolous and
unnecessary legal challenges, re: #1 above.
On the positive side, we have actively discussed ways to rebuild
community trust in the PRRVA, and to find ways to work with other
major groups on the Point. We have decided that goals for the
future of the PRRVA should be tied to issues of voter registration
and all things pertaining to getting important information out
to the general public. We feel that political bias, or personal
political agendas should not dictate actions taken by the board.
We would like to encourage more public discussions, such as our
forum on the proposed sub-area plan changes, and the annual candidates
night. The PRRVA looks to the year 2002 as a time for making the
voice of Point Roberts heard in Whatcom County and Washington
state. To this end, one major goal for 2002 is to have every eligible
person in Point Roberts both registered and voting..
