2001 IN REVIEW
Chamber of Commerce

By Terrie LaPorte

February: Hugo Llorens of the U.S. Consulate General’s office lunched with us. The chamber provided seed money to the Dollars for Scholars. Three of the chamber directors personally pledged $200 each.

March: Fire plan review and California Dreamin’ Spring Social linked up with Delta tourism. Louise Mugar visited government representatives in Washington, D.C. to tout our pier project. Congressman Rick Larsen and aide Andy Anderson attended a luncheon at Brewsters in April.

May: Tsawwassen Rotary pledged financial assistance to our pier project.
June/July: Saw us at Lighthouse Café. June’s topic was water treatment. The chamber scholarship went to Paula Sweatt.

In July we heard from the Point Roberts Golf Course and we held a golf raffle with a swing fit club giveaway to bring web cams to the Point. The chamber’s 4th of July parade was coordinated by Jenny Lynn Fraser.

September: We were at Dockside Cafe for the fire department strategic plan review, which was also the topic at the community center in October. Chamber representatives attended two meetings in Blaine regarding border issues. Louise also attended a border conference with all chambers on October 24.

We believe our efforts through meetings and interviews with CNN, ABC, CBC, KVOS, and articles about the border in the New York Times, Bellingham Herald, Globe and Mail, South Delta Leader, Vancouver Courier, and, of course, The Northern Light and All Point Bulletin assisted in getting two new agents specifically assigned to Point Roberts.

The chamber also advertised in the South Delta Leader and Discover Washington to invite people to visit Point Roberts.

The Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce has representation on the following groups: 1. The Point Roberts Planning and Development Committee, established with the Port of Bellingham. 2. The strategic planning group – working with chief Campbell of Fire District #5. 3. The Lighthouse Society – looking to have a lighthouse built at Lighthouse Park. 4. The Sub-area Planning Committee. 5. Two representatives on the Point Roberts Character Plan Committee.

We coordinated the tourist booth in the summer and worked all year long on the pier project, which is in the last stages of Phase II.

Our website which offers links to businesses and their websites, is constantly being updated to provide information at www.PointRobertsChamber.com and we respond to calls on the chamber information line at 945-2313.

We maintain our local chamber welcome sign and consistently send email notices regarding upcoming events or important issues affecting all of us.

Thanks to Point Roberts Auto Freight we have a traveling billboard seen daily along I-5 and Highway 99. The chamber also paid to have a sign taken to Alaska by Cliff and Linda Anderson with the name of Point Roberts on it.

One of the highlights of our year was having Senator Georgia Gardner at our recent AGM who indicated that she’s got a ferry for us. The Hi Yu. It has all been so exciting.

The chamber has been responsive and pro-active and working for the businesses of Point Roberts. We thank you for that opportunity.
