Washington
House of Representatives
By Representative
Doug Ericksen
2001 - what a year! As we come to the end of the first year of
the new millennium, its clear our state is at a significant
crossroad.
At a time when our economy is struggling and the state is facing
a budget shortfall of more than $1 billion, citizens are looking
for leaders to provide strong and focused guidance. We have our
work cut out for us.
It will be critical for the legislature to use forethought and
spend every tax dollar wisely and efficiently. Although there
is no denying our state is facing a budget crisis, we must be
diligent in keeping tax increases out of the equation until we
can assure the public that its tax dollars are being spent wisely.
During the 2001 legislative session, I worked to rebuild the publics
trust by finding and adopting ways for government to save money
and operate more efficiently.
We know incorporating efficiencies and reallocating existing tax
revenue will ensure taxpayers keep more of their hard-earned dollars.
I am very proud of progress we made, and more specifically, with
my role in passing major legislation that streamlined transportation
permitting while also establishing clear environmental standards.
As we approach the 2002 session, I remain committed to ensuring
local transportation projects continue to progress toward completion.
Another priority of mine will be to continue working with local,
state and federal officials on the Birch Bay Water and Sewer District
sewage treatment facility expansion project.
Whether solving our budget crisis, ensuring clean water for our
community or moving forward on transportation projects that will
keep people and businesses moving, my guiding principle will continue
to protect the taxpayer by using every tax dollar wisely and efficiently..
