A change in body, a change in mind

By Meg Olson

Point Roberts yoga teacher Desiree Kleeman is already packing her small yoga studio on Madrona Place three nights a week and is thinking of expanding her classes. “I might add a Saturday class or one in the morning if people are interested,” she said.

After 20 years as a dancer and dance instructor, Kleeman switched gears four years ago. “I took a yoga class and thought how wonderful this is. It changed my life,” she said. “I still remember my first couple of classes, leaving and feeling like I’d had a massage from the inside out.”

Kleeman has been teaching yoga for a year and recently remodeled her garage to become a small studio. She also teaches several times a week at a Ladner studio. The form of yoga she teaches is Ashtanga, a more active version of traditional Iyengar yoga. “There are connecting movements between the postures to keep the blood flowing,” she explained. However, Kleeman said the precision of Iyengar creeps into her classes. “It’s so much about alignment that we do a lot of those postures as well.”

Kleeman has an advanced class on Wednesday evenings and intermediate classes on Tuesday and Thursday. “We had a beginning class but everyone moved up,” Kleeman said. ‘As we have more people we’ll add level one again.”

Her studio on the Point only holds seven students, but Kleeman said the intimacy is an advantage. “There’s so much personal attention. I’m constantly adjusting people,” she said. She’s seen changes in her students as their flexibility, posture and overall health improved. “It’s exciting to see the changes in people,” she said. “ I used to see a chiropractor every six weeks for my neck, my back. I have not been back in three years. Yoga helps you realign yourself. It starts to even change your eating habits without you knowing it.”

Because of the size of her studio, Kleeman has students pre-pay for blocks of classes at $7 a class so she knows whom to expect. However, she’s rarely had to turn someone away if they call at the last minute.
