Low on energy? Here’s help!

A program that helps families with heating expenses, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), is now available at the Opportunity Council.

Since November 13, over 300 Whatcom County families have received energy grants. Grants are given on a first-come, first-serve basis and the program will continue through the heating season or until all money is distributed. Call the Opportunity Council, 734-5121, extension 360, to make an appointment at the Opportunity Council office, 314 E. Holly Street, Bellingham or at one of the county interview sites including Everson, Maple Falls, Sumas, Blaine and Ferndale. LIHEAP is supported by federal funds. This Opportunity Council program makes a significant difference in the lives of families who are making choices between paying for heat or buying food. Last year LIHEAP helped over 2,800 families stay warm.

The Opportunity Council is a nonprofit, community action agency serving Island, San Juan and Whatcom counties. Since 1965, the Opportunity Council has worked to provide local programs that “help people help themselves,” including energy assistance, emergency housing, childcare, and local Head Start/ECEAP programs.
