LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The Editor:
This year the theme for our July 4th parade is A Celebration of Independence and Freedom. We would like to see red, white and blue colors.
We are looking forward to a fabulous parade honoring our past and present heroes, pioneers and forefathers.
We hope to see entries from all our local groups, businesses and neighborhoods. We always warmly welcome our neighbors to the north as parade entrants and viewers. Entry forms will be available May 15 at local businesses and the post office.
For any information or forms, please contact Jenny Lynn Fraser at 945-1236.

The Dollars for Scholars annual spring fundraising campaign has started off with a bang, thanks to some generous people who believe in supporting our kids. First to bat in the business world was Whidbey Telephone, which has given a $500 scholarship in it’s name. Other local businesses that responded to the call were: South Beach House Restaurant, the Blue Heron Gallery, Sterling Bank, and the Point Roberts Marketplace.
The primary goal of the Point Roberts Dollars for Scholars is to give a scholarship for continuing education to every graduating high school student that applies who resides in Point Roberts.
Residents who have contributed include Ron and Bev Nielson, Peter Allard, Minda Eadie-Wilson, Davea and John Fisher, Tim and Doreen Trudel, Steve and Leslie O’Neill, Frank and Frances Luccia, Margaret and Bruno Moras, Jim and Joan Lindy, Mary McBride, Shelley Damewood, Kathy and Ed Aydon, Lorene Graham, Eleanor Meikle, Fred and Pauline DeHaan, Stuart and Elaine McFarland, Mary and John Miller, Louise and Pat Grubb, Charman Briggs, and Kimberly Pringle.
Now that we’ve reached our primary goal, we are anxious to reach others. Dollars for Scholars also wants to give scholarships to Point Roberts youth who are currently in college, to adults returning to college, and to help students in high school or grade school attending educational enrichment programs.
Last year we awarded $6,500 in scholarships to nine students. This year we have even more students applying, so we need to raise more money. We want to encourage our students to continue their education and to know that their community supports them. If you’d like to assist, send a tax-free donation to Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 2168, Point Roberts, WA 98281.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us get off to such a great start. Our future is our youth. Thanks for giving them your support.

Hello to all at Point Roberts. I’m sure many of you have been wondering what Evelyn Roth, my wife and ex long-time Point Roberts resident has been up to since she sold up and moved permanently to Australia.
Officially it’s her retirement year, but it looks like being one of her busiest. Her wonderful inflatable story telling theaters, mazes and climbing webs are still bringing joy and color to people young and old.
I’m sure many of you have been a part of Evelyn’s life at Point Roberts over the years. I know she has always welcomed folks into her home to share events such as equinox egg balancing, the inflation of a new creation, etc. It’s pretty much the same here in Oz.
Unfortunately, 2001, her last year in Point Roberts was a stressful time for her, many of you know the details of this. However, the good times, happy memories and good friends made far outweigh any negatives.
Her old house was purchased by long-time residents of Point Roberts, Stephen and Carol Fowler. Even though their visions on the future of the house are different to Evelyn’s original use, they still appreciate the character and charm of this unique old building, they obviously love the area, and I’m sure they will add much to the local community with its future use.
Myself, I have been very fortunate to visit your part of the world and meet some wonderful residents and close friends of Evelyn, and to have first hand experience of why you love the area so much. Beautiful forests teeming with life, eagles, herons, kayaking from Boundary to South Beach, and the magnificent view across Boundary Bay of Mt. Baker. Truly unforgettable.
Coming from the driest state in the driest continent on earth, it is amazing to see so much greenery, lush forests, water and those huge cedars.
Our wonderful close friend Renee Coe, who we keep in regular contact with via e-mail, has told us that there was a community fundraiser for the Lopez family who lost a family member recently. The support was evidently fantastic and raised a considerable amount. This shows what a close, supportive community you have, and to repeat what Renee said – friends who support you in need, that is what life is all about. I couldn’t agree more! Best wishes to all of you, and I’m sure we’ll venture back one day.

Brian Hart’s comment that it is a repugnant idea for a community based on tourism to have a lane for residents is moronic.
The tourists who come across the border are by definition doing so on their leisure time. As a Point resident, crossing the border into Canada for me means going to work. Returning means coming back to attend to the responsibilities of maintaining a household. I’m not on vacation here. This is my family’s year-round home. We pay taxes and vote here.
I don’t think it’s too much to ask for tourists to respect the lives of those who live in the community they visit. In a place as geographically unique as Point Roberts the trade-off is pretty simple – the tourists get all of the lower priced products they seem most willing to line up for and we get a separate lane to conduct our normal lives. A lane that used to exist as the PACE lane – something nobody had a problem with.
I wish Mr. Hart a pleasant summer. A summer of getting to within a half mile of his house and then waiting for two hours while people in search of recreation or bargains delay him access to his home. I then wish him the joy of listening to someone from another country tell him it’s repugnant to wish it otherwise.

I would like to thank the following people for their contributions to the annual Dollars for Scholars book and bake sale on March 30. Such support made this one of the most successful fundraisers we have had since our inception just over a year ago, and gives us more realization that this community is generous in time and effort when it comes to supporting our cause for helping people to continue their education.
Many thanks go to Jay Lewis, manager of International Marketplace, and staff for allowing us such space on a very busy Saturday. We were very grateful for all their help.
I would like to thank all the students who helped in the setting up and selling of our baked goods and books. Kyle Teutsch, Celeste Fraser, Wesley Hubbard, Dustin Massey, Carly Hubbard, and Rose Smith all did a great job.
I also would like to thank Bloomers for the lovely primrose baskets that added a touch of spring and color to our tables and provided some lucky people with excellent hostess gifts.
What would our book and bake sale be without donations of baked goods and books? What a pleasure it was seeing, selling, and buying all the benefits of the ovens of Point Roberts and the many books that people generously donated! The efforts of all donors were greatly appreciated.
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank all the generous people who bought our baked goods, books, flowers, and preserves.
Without you, we would not have been able to raise a whopping $683 for our scholarships to be awarded in 2002. It was a splendid show of community spirit. Thank you.

The Editor:
It was wonderful to see everyone all dressed up in their finest at our recent annual Spring Social. The generosity of our donators from both sides of the border helped to ensure that our guests went home with some terrific prizes through the raffle and silent auction.
A special thank you to Whidbey Telephone Company who was our door prize sponsor for this year’s event. The marina facility is a great venue and Mark and Helena from the Dockside Café absolutely outdid themselves for our dinner.
Thank you to all, especially those friends and members who helped to sell the tickets to the dance and for the raffle. Your continued support allows us to put on events such as the 4th of July and to promote tourism to the area. This was our 5th annual and we look forward to seeing you next year!
You have a year to plan for next year’s theme which is to wear a hat, and the apparel must match.

I would like to thank the community of Point Roberts for helping to make Trinity’s yard sale a great success. Thank you for your donations and for coming to shop. Thanks also to my co-chairperson Maureen Hofstead for a job well done. There are many more who worked very hard. To them a special thanks. We were a good team.
