LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR
The Editor:
I wish to acknowledge and thank all the folks that organized and
participated in our 4th of July parade - job well done.
After enjoying the parade, I headed to the park for lunch. That
was until I saw that the exchange for Canadian dollars was 50
percent. Needless to say, I had lunch at home. A couple of days
prior to this, I experienced the same thing; 50 percent exchange
at one of the local cafes. Thank goodness for choices. Where do
they get their rates?
If the exchange is actually 50 percent, I do pay this; however,
I resent being ripped off.
How about exchange rates being posted at the cash registers. This
way one knows the rates prior to ordering a meal, etc.
Thank goodness that most of the cafes want Canadian money. I know
where I will and won’t spend my money.

Once again, we were privileged to have the Vancouver police department
motorcycle drill team participate in the annual parade in Point
Roberts.
For a small community such as Point Roberts, the addition of the
drill team to the parade adds to everyone’s enjoyment of the event.
Would you please pass on our thanks to the members of the drill
team for their many hours of practice and for their participation.

Once again, we have produced a great July 4th and once again I
am in awe of some of the really consistently creative hard workers
we have here. I can’t emphasize enough what the general public
may not realize. These people work their buns off for free, just
to make Point Roberts a community that is a joy to live in. Just
to make children laugh. Just to insure that we have the richness
of annual traditions.
So how about a round of applause for just a few of them? Let’s
give it up for Ginger Porter, Art Wilkowski, Hildegaard Weiss,
Margaret Moras, Delta Cable and the Vancouver police department.
Yup, I probably missed a bunch of people that should be mentioned,
and thank you to all who participated. You businesses that built
floats in the middle of your busy season, I am crazy about you
and will patronize you forever.
I still hear sighs about missing the fireworks. I miss them too.
If anyone wants to commander a firework project for next year,
I will help.
Next years theme is Adventures in Space, 2004.
And now I move on to the Arts and Music Festival, August 2 and
3. If I have inspired you to work for free, to build community
and provide paint on faces of giggling children, then call me.
We are running children’s workshops all during the festival. Or
if you ever wanted Ed to be a roady or run a booth, we can fulfill
your fantasies. Call me.

July Fourth came and went with a bang at Lighthouse Park this
year with another successful kids carnival sponsored by Dollars
by Scholars. This year, the kids carnival raised $695.73! Again,
this community supported our cause in many ways. Following are
some of them:
We asked the community for donations of new or barely used stuffed
toys and what an assortment we got for well-loved prizes for the
games. Thank you to everyone who found such great toys in their
cupboards. We asked for cakes for our cake decorating contest
and cakewalk and many kids were fortunate to receive spectacular
accomplishments by the generous bakers of Point Roberts. Thanks
to all bakers who supplied us with a yummy assortment of cakes.
We asked for used glasses for the dime toss and great quantities
of glasses were received for this popular game. Thanks to everyone
who donated. All glasses were used.
Many people gave time to run this carnival, the majority of whom
were students themselves who some day may be hoping that a carnival
as successful as this one will fund scholarships for them. They
can take pride in the accomplishments they achieved this year.
Special thanks must go to Ginger Porter, a key organizer of the
event and a tireless worker. This included running out for more
balloons when we ran out, and of course, rounding up a good crew
of workers for the games. Also, thanks to Susan Borget who ran
the cake walk. She did a great job and many kids won fabulous
cakes.
Thanks also to Kitty Doyle who provided a piece of her artwork
for our silent auction, that fetched a tidy sum. Many thanks to
Ben and his crew of park workers who came through with a much
needed table and who kept an eye on us to attend to other potential
needs.
Finally, I want to thank all the kids who came to the carnival
and played the games. You were the most important element in making
the carnival the success it was. Hope to see you again next year.

We would like to thank John and Davea Fisher for all their imagination,
inspiration, dedication, tireless hard work, and service to our
community. Because of their efforts, the town was able to reenact
an historical event at Lighthouse Park on Saturday, July 19. The
event that was celebrated was the picnic of 1908, the day in history
when many of the town’s men came home with the homestead deeds
to their lands. It was a day of great rejoicing then and now.
We all had a marvelous time. There was the reenactment, then everyone
ate their picnic lunch, all the while accompanied by the Brass
Belles playing in the background. After lunch, there were many
games, a pie baking contest, and then a watermelon eating contest
put on by our fire department. Other people in our community participated
in putting this event together, but it would not have happened
at all if it was not for John and Davea Fisher. Thankyou so much
for being a part of our community!
It is our hope that every year we could have our town picnic.
What a wonderful way for a community to celebrate itself, and
can you imagine the fun we could plan for our centennial in 2008!
