Taxi: On call and ready to roll
Don’t get
off that couch. The Point has now joined the fast food world and
you can get a pizza delivered to your door. Or do get off that
couch and go to karaoke, or a wine dinner, or just out to meet
some friends and play pool. If you have a few too many Darren
Katamay will give you a ride home. A recent arrival in Point Roberts,
Katamay started the Point Roberts Cab Company in September and
is working to acquaint the community with the variety of services
he is providing. “Whatever people need,” is how he described his
business. His six-passenger van will take people and luggage to
the Vancouver airport for a flat rate of $35, into downtown Vancouver
for $40, or to the airport in Bellingham for $50. He will pick
up takeout food or groceries for the meter rate of the trip with
a $5 minimum. At the meter rate local residents can take their
dog to the vet in Tsawwassen, or catch the bus in Ladner. “I’m
available all the time,” Katamay said.
Some trips
he doesn’t charge for. “For anyone needing help getting to or
from the Wellness Center I’m offering a complimentary service,”
Katamay said.
As his customers
get to know him better, Katamay said he is also getting to know
them and what they want. Next summer he plans to add a bike rack
to the van.
In his first
month of service Katamay said he has seen a lot of business sail
into the marina. “I’ve gotten people coming in on their boats
who want to go to the golf course or to and from any of our restaurants
and bars,” he said. His business is continuing to grow as more
people get to know about it. “People have been very supportive,”
he said. “People want the service, it’s just a matter of the community
getting used to it being available.”
