The Holidays in Point Roberts
Blue Heron
Gallery
“We’re fully Christmased out,’ said Blue Heron Gallery owner Kitty
Doyle, smiling over stacks of cards and bows, snowman bags and
sparkling Santas. The gallery has everything you need for the
purely Point Roberts Christmas tree, including handpainted eagle,
heron or orca ornaments and handblown glass prisms. Wreaths, holiday
flags, wrapping paper, boxes and cards are just a sampling of
the festive gear Doyle has to offer. The gallery also has unique
gifts, many with a local flavor: a Point Roberts calendar, heron
earrings, the game of Dao invented by park manager Ben Van Buskirk,
and lots of other work by local artists and crafters. Blue Heron
Gallery at 1360 Gulf Road is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday
through Monday.
Point Roberts
International Marketplace
At the Point Roberts International Marketplace you can pick up
Christmas dinner and a few last minute gifts at the same time.
Or you can shop for your Thanksgiving turkey and lights for the
tree in the same place. The store has a great selection of holiday
supplies, from wrapping paper to an angel for the top of the tree.
They also carry toys, candy and other gifts. To help make entertaining
easier, Marketplace butchers will fill special orders for rib
roasts and turkeys to spiral cut ham, and the deli can customize
trays to meet any party’s tastes. “We have a bunch of new cheeses
for the holidays,” said deli manager Wanda Bordeville. “If there
is something you want I don’t have, with some notice I can special
order it.”
Nielson's
Building Center
Lorne Nielson has expanded the store at Nielson’s Building Center
and is expanding Christmas offerings to match. “We’re branching
out,” said longtime store employee Georgina Mathey. Every delivery
truck that pulls up at Nielson’s is ferrying a growing assortment
of toys for big and little kids, from paintball guns and bikes
to lawnmowers and drills. They’ll also be adding small appliances
for those who like to do their playing in the kitchen. Nielson’s
Building Center is also the place for Christmas trees on the Point.
Trees arriving December 1 will include Noble and Grand firs and
Scotch pine.

Waves
“We’re having a great time!” said Waves customer Jan Walker, trying
on dozens of formal gowns under the watchful eye of friend Penny
Lesow. “This is cruise wear.” Waves has dresses for all kinds
of bodies bound for all sorts of parties, and the accessories
to go with them. On the other side of the store there are outfits

Brewsters
Brewsters owner Joan Roberts and her band of merry servers welcome
tired shoppers for lunch or an end of the day cocktail and have
some ideas for Christmas presents besides. The Gulf Road restaurant
offers $60 gift cards good for ten two-for-one meals as well as
standard gift certificates. Roberts will also make custom orders
