K-12 on the Point?

The Blaine school district has a hired consultant to look into whether to expand the Point Roberts school all the way through high school.

Primary school principal Nancy Bakarich said the idea had come from local parents who want to save their kids hours on the bus. At their November 25 meeting the Blaine school district board approved the request and hired Jack Thompson to study the feasibility of a kindergarten through 12th grade.

Thompson will start his investigation with a community meeting scheduled for January 22, 7 p.m. at the community center, where he will ask parents and community members if they think the Point needs a K-12 school and what that school should offer.

“He gets input from students, parents looks at costs and proceeds from there,” Bakarich said. Thompson’s report to the school board, which will look at things like cost per student, what size of building would be needed and what types of programs a Point Roberts school could offer, is due in June.

Currently there are 31 students in the Point Roberts primary school and 140 students ride the bus to Blaine schools..
