Get ready for a star-studded Fourth of July!

by Meg Olson

This year Fourth of July organizers are going back to an old favorite the silver screen. “The theme this year is favorite movies,” said Pam Oakley. “We did it in 1994 and everyone really likes it so we’re doing it again.”

So far Oakley said there are already 30 floats signed up. “Seems like all the local businesses are doing it,” she said. “We don’t have a lot of neighborhoods yet.” Entries so far include a Wonkamobile, Austin Powers, Snow White and Betty Boop. There are also participants from across the line, such as Delta Tourism and traditional parade openers, the Vancouver Police drill team.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. from the Breakers parking lot at the foot of Gulf Road and runs along Gulf and down Tyee Drive to the marina parking lot.

Following the parade festivities continue at Lighthouse Marine Park with the Dollars for Scholars kids carnival, an afternoon of games and prizes to raise young spirits and funds for their future education. “It’s a huge effort but it’s not so much about the effort as it is meeting the needs of the community,” said organizer Margaret Moras. “This is a big day in Point Roberts and after the parade what do the kids do?”

The carnival will have dozens of old fashioned activities such as a dime toss, face painting, guessing the number of jelly beans in a jar and a fish pond. “The kids seem to love these games,” Moras said. “Everybody wins prizes. Just little ones but something to take home.” Local young people sign up to run the games and Moras said they are still looking for volunteers.

A favorite is the cakewalk, a version of musical chairs played on squares drawn on the ground in which the one landing on the lucky square when the music stops wins a cake. “They get some really nice cakes,” Moras said. All cakes are donated by local bakers.

Moras said often the best part of a community carnival is events and games that just crop up, like last year’s spontaneous silent auction for last minute donations. “You never know what comes up,” she said.

To donate cakes, volunteer to run a booth or donate nearly new toys and stuffed animals as prizes, call Margaret Moras at 945-2940 or Ginger Porter at 945-1308. For a parade entry contact Oakley at 945-1816.
