An
old-fashioned town picnic!
by
Davea Fisher
There will be a town wide picnic held at noon Saturday, July 19
at Lighthouse Park. Everyone is invited. Bring your family and
friends, a couple of lawn chairs and a picnic lunch. The event
is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Historical
Society.
At the picnic
there will be a historic tableau depicting a moment from the famous
picnic of 1908. Long ago, the earliest Point Roberts settlers
applied to the United States government to get permission to homestead
the land. Many years went by. Finally, in 1908, Teddy Roosevelt
made their dreams come true and a town wide picnic was held to
celebrate the event.
It is hoped
that lots of current residents will come and help us to re-enact
that happy moment and to join in a town wide picnic. If you wish
to be included, call Davea Fisher at 945-0890.
Besides the
tableau, there will be several entertaining events to add to your
enjoyment: The Brass Belles, a brass quintet, will give a concert
playing 1900s music. The Point Roberts seniors will hold an old-fashioned
pie baking contest, so be sure to bring your best pie and enter
the contest. The Point Roberts firefighters will compete in a
watermelon-eating contest, which should be lots of fun to watch.
Nielson’s Building Center will hold an exciting hoop rolling contest;
and the Friends of the Library will hold a “guessing contest”
and demonstrate some games of yesteryear. A fun-filled afternoon
- don’t miss it!
