The bus is rolling along

By Joan Roberts

The community service van is up and running! I would like to thank the WTA and all of the volunteer drivers who make it possible to l ink us with life beyond Point Roberts. The van schedule is printed in the paper and posted at various places in Point Roberts: community center, Marketplace, Wellness Clinic and the post office. You can also access the schedule on the WTA website, www.ridewta.com. To date, there are nine drivers certified to drive and we are actively seeking more so that more service can be offered.

Our goal is to provide weekly trips to Blaine/Bellingham and provide transportation to entertainment venues in Canada. The summer schedule will be different from the school year when the demand is greater to get to and from school events. If you have a scheduling idea, please call the reservation line at 945-2844 or email ridethevan@hotmail.com.

Following is a list of frequently asked questions:
1. How do I arrange a ride? Call the reservation line with your name, phone number and number of riders. We will call you back to reconfirm.
2. Where do I catch the van? You will catch regularly scheduled trips at the Wellness Clinic. If you are unable to get there, call the reservation line and we will arrange to pick you up.
3. How does my group arrange to use the van? Email or call the reservation line with your request. Providing the van is not scheduled for another group or event and we can find a volunteer driver, we will accommodate your request.
4. What does it cost? There is no charge to ride.
5. How old does a child need to be to ride unattended? A child must be at least six-years-old to ride within our community and at least ten-years-old to cross borders. Proper ID and permission letters are required to cross the border.
6. Do you have to be a Point Roberts resident to ride the van? No, however, Point Roberts residents will be given priority to ride if there are more than 14 people signed up for the trip.
7. Can I rent the van or hire the driver for a private function? No. The van must adhere to strict rules outlined by the WTA.
8. How do I volunteer and what is the time commitment? To volunteer, please email us or call the reservation line. Volunteers choose which trip they are able to drive. The time commitment can be as little as two hours per month or as much as you are able to volunteer.

To maintain the service in our community, we must continue to show a need for transportation. We encourage you to think of ways the van will benefit our community and please ride the van.
(Roberts is chair of the Point Roberts transportation committee, overseeing the community van service)
