Buy some art and then scoot off!

By Meg Olson

When Miss Molly’s farm market returns to the Texaco station this June it will have company. The recently formed Point Roberts Artisans’ Guild will operate a craft fair alongside the vegetables, and Ocean Soul will be renting motor scooters to visitors wishing to tour the Point.

“There are so many incredibly talented people on the Point without a venue to show or sell the wonderfully diverse things they make,” said Point Roberts Artisans’ Guild member Heather Good. “There’s been a stagnation.”

To promote and revitalize the local arts community a dozen local artisans voted recently to form the guild and pursue non-profit status. Their first order of business was to find a market for their works and Good saw an opportunity next to Sheelagh Oliver’s popular seasonal produce business. “I saw how much business they brought in and thought it would be a wonderful place for a craft market.” The guild got permission from the Texaco station owners and is set to open their craft market on June 21, opening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday during the summer.

Guild members will be able to set up a table for their wares free of charge and other artists will be welcome to sell their work as part of the market with guild approval. The guild will also operate a consignment table for those who don’t have the time to man their own.

“It’s really a diverse group,” Good said of participating artisans. “ I think the wealth of talent will surprise people.” Visitors to the craft fair can expect quilts, jewelery, gourmet foods, wood carvings, paintings, soap, ironwork, lampshades, birdbaths and a variety of other local handmade items. Artisans interested in participating or joining the guild can call Good at 945-2080.

Ocean Soul rentals owner Cindy Webster used scooters to get around while travelling and ended up buying some for guests to use when they visit her in Point Roberts. “I’ve used them in Key West, in Bermuda and they’re a great fun way to see a place,” Webster said.

In early June she and partner Carol Gilmartin will start out renting out a small fleet of six Honda and Cobra scooters from the Texaco parking lot. With 49 cc engines the scooters don’t require a special motorcycle license. For insurance purposes Webster will only rent the scooters to people over 18 with a valid drivers license and a major credit card is needed for a deposit. Hourly rentals will cost $20 and special rates are available for longer rentals. The rental includes a tank of gas, a helmet and maps. For more info, call 945-2953.
