Point
Roberts Registered Voters Association losing board members
By Meg Olson
“The group
will have to revive itself or it’s down the tubes,” said Bev Griffiths,
now acting president of the Point Roberts Registered Voters Association
after Tom Hollett joined a growing number of board members resigning
and drifting away. “There are only three or four still on board
of a nine member board and that’s about it. We’ve had resignations
and people have just left,” Griffiths said, adding that in recent
months board meetings were so poorly attended they did not have
quorum.
Hollett,
who became president of the association in 2001, toppling the
previous board at the annual general meeting with his own slate
of candidates, said he was resigning because he “had some plans
for the future.” He did not attend the February meeting of the
board and advised fellow board members of his decision by phone.
“I thought it was time for some fresh blood,” he said. Hollett
said he felt the association continued to be an important avenue
for public education and thought the dwindling attendance at board
meetings was just a sign of peaceful times. “There’s nothing controversial
to bring people out,” he said.
Griffiths
said the association needs to be active on a good dozen local
issues, including the Wellness Clinic, the community van, the
proposed lighthouse and pier, local agencies and county policies
and enforcement.
At the association’s
March 19 annual general meeting Griffiths hopes local voters will
come forward to hear about these issues from local leaders and
participate in an association that was formed over 30 years ago
to insure the Point had some clout with government agencies. At
least five board positions are open. “What I’m hoping is that
if the word got around people would say, wait a second, I don’t
want to just see this die,” she said. “It’s important for Point
Roberts to have a unified voice.”
