New
pathway part of trail network
By Meg Olson
A new trail
leading from APA Road through marina-owned land to Lighthouse
Marine Park is only one segment of a new trail network being developed
by the Point Roberts Marina.
Marina manager
Terry Ritchey said that as part of an effort to tidy up undeveloped
marina lands, crews had been clearing weeds and blackberries from
open areas west of Tyee and north of Edwards drives. In the process
they are collaborating with Lighthouse Park manager Ben Van Buskirk
and boy scout work groups to reclaim a path that starts at the
apple tree across from the marina entrance sign on Tyee Drive.
“Right now
it follows the water along to Edwards Drive where the lake comes
out,” Ritchey said. “Eventually it may connect to the campground.”
Ritchey said other sections of the trail were also in the works
or in planning stages. “The next section we’re working on runs
from the public beach by the condos north past the eagle nests,”
he said. “It’s part of our future development as a resort, and
it’s going to tie things together from one end to another.”
Today, the
value of the trails is in getting visitors and residents close
to the natural diversity that makes its home in Point Roberts.
“It’s a tremendous resource and it’s always been there,” Ritchey
said. “There are river otters, deer, coyotes, raccoons, woodpeeckers,
lots of herons at heart it’s a nature trail.”
