INSIDE
Enrichment Scholarship Project offering county scholarships
Enrichment
Scholarship Project, a philanthropic project of Assistance League
of Bellingham, will again offer summer scholarships for students
in all Whatcom County school districts.
Eligible
students are those in sixth through 11th grades who want to learn
more about music, art, science, mathematics, drama, leadership,
language, law, environmental awareness, business, nursing, journalism
or other areas of interest during the summer of 2003. Exceptions
to the possibilities are sports, foreign study and exchange programs,
private lessons and transportation.
Awards will
be based on merit, potential, talent, motivation, and the written
recommendation of the student’s counselor. In each public middle
school and high school, a counselor is designated to distribute
the application forms and answer questions. The deadline for returning
applications to the counselor is April 1, 2003.
Last year
$15,000 was distributed to 54 students in Whatcom County public
schools. Included were two Blaine high school students, Neal Teutsch
and Celeste Fraser. Teutsch’s field of study was Law and Advocacy
as well as The Trial. He attended the Presidential Classroom in
Washington, D.C. Fraser’s field of study was also Law and Advocacy
and she attended the National Student Leadership Conference. Three
Blaine middle school students attended Western Washington University’s
Adventures in Science and Art. Robert Bleecker’s field was engineering,
Chris Stamback’s field was creative design and Brandeon Bleecker’s
field was geology.
Assistance
League members hope parents and other adults will encourage interested
students to apply at the schools as soon as possible. The application
forms are also available at the chapter’s Thrift and Gift Shop,
1415 Cornwall Avenue, but the students must contact the counselor
for details.
