Cooking
up a storm and a scholarship
By

Point Roberts
cooks are teaming up to help Point Roberts students. At their
April 19 bake sale at the Point Roberts Marketplace Dollars for
Scholars unveiled a compilation of favorite recipes from nearly
100 locals reflecting the history and lifestyle of the community.
This month, the cooks who participated in creating the cookbook
will offer a taste of their recipes to entice more book buyers.
“We tried
to emphasize the kind of place Point Roberts is,” said creator
Margaret Moras, who read through hundreds of submissions to select
the approximately 250 that are included in the cookbook. Many
of the recipes evoke the Point’s past as a fishing center and
present, surrounded by the sea and its riches. “There is certainly
an emphasis on seafood,” Moras said. The book also celebrates
local passion for gardening, focusing on fresh ingredients, and
“of course there are blackberry recipes,” Moras said.
Moras had
the idea of putting together a local cookbook to complement one
of the major annual Dollars for Scholars fundraisers their annual
bake sale. In the past, the association has sold used books at
the sale, a preview of their big August book sale. “I thought
that a cookbook would be more appropriate and would give more
pizzazz to the bake sale,” Moras said.
In a free
event at the community center May 17 a number of cooks will promote
the book with a taste of the recipes they contributed. The cookbook
will also be available at the Blue Heron Gallery on Gulf Road.
Moras said
that the primary purpose of the cookbook is as a fundraising tools
to help Dollars for Scholars raise money to help local students
reach their educational goals, whether it’s financial help with
tuition for college or a special summer education program.
However,
the book should also be a good addition to local culinary culture.
“This represents the people here in Point Roberts,” Moras said.
“These are the favorites of cooks in Point Roberts and there are
a surprising number of good cooks in Point Roberts.”
