LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR
The Editor:
As a retired reporter and reviewer for several give-away weeklies
up here – most of which had some genuine independence
of thought, until the ongoing corporate quest for acquisitions “synergy” – I
have very rarely read as self-aggrandizing and solipsistic,
let alone incoherent a letter as Ron Calder’s idiotic
diatribe in the November All Point Bulletin. A real jaw-dropper.
What a rebel without a pause the man is – does he epitomize
trailer-trash, trash talk, or not? Calder scurrilously drags
the local miscreants’ names through the mud, one being
a teen with the good chance of a fruitful life ahead of her,
the other a family man with a life left in tatters. Just how
low, how mealy-mouthed can any correspondent sink?

The Point Roberts Registered Voters’ Association would
like to thank Jay Lewis of the International Marketplace for
allowing us to set up out front for our voter registration drive.
Special thanks also to the other businesses and places that provided
forms and information to those who wished to register.
Through these combined efforts and the phenomenal interest of
the citizens, the roles of registered voters at Point Roberts
has swelled by approximately 20 percent.
Point Roberts and democracy wins when the citizenry is involved.

Shortly after the polls closed on November 2, a senior political
correspondent at the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) confidently
announced to viewers, “John Kerry will be the next President
of the United States. Remember – you heard it here first!”
Given the thinly-veiled contempt most Canadians have for President
Bush and the United States in general, the pronouncement from
the exuberant CBC wag was not unexpected. I am sure many Point
Roberts residents were equally jubilant at the prospect of “booting
out Bush,” as articulated in the August All Point Bulletin,
by our omnipresent Democratic PCO.
No doubt many of your local and Canadian readers shared the post-election
sentiments headlined in London’s Daily Mirror – “How
Could 59 Million U.S. Voters be so Dumb?”
American voters understand that war is never cost-free and that
you don’t run away because of a couple of setbacks. That
one jailhouse scandal should not undermine America’s security
interests. Voters rejected the childish caricature of their President
and the paranoid ravings about Halliburton and they declined
to have their vote rocked by Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, P. Diddy,
or any other pop culture poser.
Here at home, Republican Doug Ericksen easily won re-election
to the Washington state legislature with 58 percent of the vote.
Likewise, Democrat Kelli Linville won her re-election with 58
percent of the vote.
Both candidates did so because they are good people, capable
legislators and have consistently refused to engage in negative
campaigning. Their re-endorsement by the voters of Whatcom County
is the most positive and hopeful result in an otherwise divisive
election.

We are thrilled to announce the return of the highly successful
Holiday Fair and Dinner on Saturday, December 11 at the Point
Roberts community center. An opportunity to enjoy a fun festive
meal with friends and neighbors alike, the event also provides
attendees with the opportunity to purchase locally made holiday
gifts. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served
at 7.
The dinner is a Mexican/Southwestern dinner catered by Steve
O’Neill.
We anticipate being able to sell approximately 85 tickets to
this event. We are hoping to spread the holiday spirit, provide
a showcase for local artisans and to raise funds for the Point
Roberts food bank. The evening will include live music by local
group MCT and a raffle including pieces by participating artisans
as well as offerings from individuals and businesses in our community.
Tickets can be purchased from Ted & Sharon Munroe at 945-1708,
or Henry Rosenthal, 945-1711.

The Editor:
The food bank needs a truck. The quilters have a quilt looking
for a home. For the holiday season, we are going to combine
these needs! The Point Roberts Quilting Group would like to
announce the ticket launch for our food bank raffle quilt,
at the Unwrap Something Special craft night dinner, on Saturday,
December 11. We are trying to raise $3,000 for the food bank
towards buying a truck, which they desperately need. So the
plan is to offer 30 tickets only at a tax-deductible donation
of $100 per ticket.
Each donor will receive a numbered certificate to use as a
receipt. When we sell the 30th ticket, we will hold the drawing
and one lucky winner will take home the Point Roberts food
bank quilt. That’s a one in 30 chance, folks, better
odds than any lottery! Please support this effort by making
a donation towards this raffle quilt. The bedsize quilt will
be on display at both craft fairs on the Point this fall, November
27 and December 11 at the community center. For more information,
or a private viewing, please contact Rose at 945-1266.
