Family
requires assistance after crash
A local family devastated by a fatal crash December 26 is looking
for community support to help their 18-year-old daughter Tiffany
rebuild her life.
“It was just a horrible tragic accident,” Valerie Mayer said.
Tiffany Mayer was driving a brown Ford Tempo towards Ladner the
morning of December 26 when she failed to stop for a red light
at the corner of 56th Street and Highway 17 in Tsawwassen, according
to Shauna MacDonald of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
A Ford Explorer headed for the ferry terminal broad-sided the
smaller car, crushing the passenger side. Tiffany’s 23-year-old
sister Sarah and her fiancé Marcus Winchester, 24, were killed
on impact. The couple had become engaged on Christmas Eve.
Of the five people in the Ford Explorer only one suffered an
injury, MacDonald said.
Tiffany Mayer was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with
life-threatening injuries, her mother said, but after four weeks
in critical care she is recovering well, if slowly. “She has a
long, long recovery ahead both physically and psychologically,”
Valerie said.
Recent arrivals on the Point from Whidbey Island, the Mayer family
was touched by the quick response of the Point Roberts community
to their tragedy. “We’ve had an overwhelming amount of love and
prayers,” Valerie said. “It’s been wonderful.” Tom Mayer, the
Point’s newest postal clerk, said the community support they’ve
received reinforced the family’s decision to make the Point their
new home. “We chose right,” he said.
A fund to help the family cope with the enormous cost of Tiffany’s
recovery has been set up at Banner Bank the Mayer Memorial Fund.
With Tiffany possibly returning home in a matter of weeks the
family is also looking for help getting her the therapy she needs.
“I need practical help finding a physical therapist who will come
to the Point,” Valerie said.
The Mayers can be reached at 945-0354.
