Roberts: Home to the 8th best golf course
The Point
Roberts golf course made the top ten in Golf Digest’s picks for
best new affordable public golf courses in the nation, coming
in at number eight.
“It’s a
prestige ranking. We’re extremely proud,” said golf course manager
Mark Lundrigan. He added the ranking was especially significant
given the Point’s remote location. While many courses ranked were
visited by hundreds of members of the rating panel, only 15 made
it to the Point, barely enough to qualify the course. “Point Roberts
is in the middle of nowhere but we got noticed. Everyone who rated
it must have loved it.”
Golf Digest’s
panel of 700 golfers evaluated nearly 200 new golf courses based
on shot values, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, and
playability. Bonus points were awarded to courses that allow players
to walk, which the Point Roberts course does.
The 18-hole
Point Roberts course officially opened in the spring of 2002 and
added a restaurant and clubhouse this year. They plan to open
a driving range in the spring and start on a residential component
in summer 2004, starting with a first phase of 57 building lots
and condominiums
Graham Cooke,
who designed the course with Wayne Carleton, was also recognized
by Golf Digest as the designer of the number one pick for a new
Canadian golf course, Lynx at Kingswood park in New Brunswick,
and the Cooke-Carleton team took second place for Canadian courses
with their design for the Sun Rivers Golf Resort in Kamloops.
