Youth group formed

A group of concerned citizens met at Trinity Lutheran Church in early April after some young people who lived on the Point were caught carrying drugs. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss our children and young people at risk.

We determined to form a community youth group to offer healthy activities and opportunities for the youth. We realized that they are somewhat isolated by the borders and lack of places to go and be themselves. Many ideas were shared.

The result was the forming of a youth group sponsored by the church and the Arts Foundation. The group of adults also decided to become a steering committee to accomplish the task of providing opportunities for youth. The Trinity church council opened the church to the group on Mondays and Fridays to ‘drop in,’ learn music and plan activities. The steering committee has met again and continues to plan. We are inviting other groups on the Point like the parks board and community foundation to join us in caring for our youth in this way.

More exciting, however, is the fact that the youth have taken responsibility for their organization. They have many events planned. Some are fun and games, some are service projects so that they can give back to the community.

They recently held a car wash at the Marketplace and due to your generous support raised a fair sum to begin a treasury. A bank account has been set up and the youth plan to use the money partly for a special fun trip and partly to do service to others on the Point. The funds will also help to cover the costs of running the group.

A dance is tentatively planned for June 12. There will be a pre-teen dance starting and ending early and then a teen dance continuing later into the evening. Watch for posters around the Point for more information.

If you want to be a part of the steering committee or volunteer to help, call Trinity Lutheran Church and talk to Pastor Mark Samuelson at 945-7105. The steering committee meets again on June 13 at 7 p.m. at the church.
