The
Blue Heron Express is off & flying
by Cheryl
Fitzgerald
The Blue
Heron Express is off and running! It is my pleasure to have taken
on the coordination of schedule and drivers for the Blue Heron
Express (formerly known as the WTA community van). We’ve had a
great month, due to the wonderful volunteers who make our schedule
work; and who have driven when we’ve had calls for rides outside
the schedule. I salute you all! If you are interested in becoming
a volunteer van driver for the Blue Heron Express, please call
the reservation line, 945-2844, and leave a message. I will get
back to you.
As of this
writing, we had 26 trips, and carried 94 residents, both children
and adults, to different venues. We went to basketball games,
the symphony concert in Bellingham, a play in Vancouver, a textile
art show on Granville Island, and movies at Silver City in Richmond.
We drove folks to thrift shops in Tsawwassen, and to the Winskill
Aquatic Center. We also drove people to the DMV, the Madrona Clinic
and the imaging center near St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham.
We are here
to provide a service to the residents of Point Roberts. If someone
needs to go to the doctor or the pharmacy in Blaine or Bellingham,
we want to help you get there; but you must to call the van reservation
line, 945-2844, at least 24 hours in advance, so we can find a
driver.
We drive
to serve our community, but we need time to find someone whose
schedule permits them to fill your need. We are delighted to drive
you and your group to the boat show or Bellis Fair. You may want
to go for a business trip, or simply fun and frolic; but we need
at least 24 hours notice to find someone who can take you there.
We can go
anywhere on the Point; to Whatcom County, Kendall, Tsawwassen,
and points within a five mile range of our route to the U.S. border.
But (all sing together, now!) we need 24 hours notice so our schedule
coordinator can find a driver.
Our schedule
for March looks busy. With swimmers going to the Winskill Aquatic
Center, and kids going out for soccer and baseball; shoppers going
to the Tsawwassen Mall or to Bellis Fair; the movies at Silver
City, and the senior lunches on Wednesdays; we’re going to be
running almost daily.
Another point
I want to make - because the schedule says: “Point Roberts Quilters
to Ladner” doesn’t mean you can’t go anywhere on that date, or
even at that time if you want to go to Ladner. In February, the
quilt group went to Granville Island for a textile show. Because
there were open spaces on the van, we were also able to take another
couple, unconnected to the quilt group, with us.
So - call
the Blue Heron Express reservation line 945-2844 and reserve your
trip now!
