OBITUARIES

John Henry Campbell
April 28, 1920 January 27, 2004

John begrudgingly “joined the angels” on January 27 with his family by his side. He is survived by Maud, his wife of 61 years, his four daughters Marion Millar (Frank Etheridge); Bonnie Campbell (Fitch Cady); Jennifer McPherson (Jim); Diana Campbell (Max Briand); 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Alf Magnussen (Gloria); and three nieces.

John was born in New York City. After finishing school, he joined the American Army. His first posting was Hawaii in 1939. He was selected to join the 10th Mountain Division and trained on Mt. Rainer, Washington. He came across the border on leave and met Maud, his future wife. He was then transferred to Colorado for more training. He sent for Maud and they were married at Camp Hale, followed by duty in the Aleutians and Italy. During fierce fighting in Italy John was wounded and came home to spend three years in the hospital. Later came postings in Korea, Argentina, Washington and California. After 22 years, John retired from the army and joined the family business as the administrator of Cedarhurst and Amherst private hospitals. John and Maud spent many happy times at the Arbutus Club where John served on the board as social director. He enjoyed curling, boating, fishing, RVing, music and winters in Palm Desert. He had two passions - one was attending the 10th Mountain L. Company reunions where his buddies could ‘swap lies with John, their 1st sergeant. The other passion was supporting and volunteering for the B.C. Paraplegic Association. In the last few years he had wonderful happy days with family and friends at their home, the White House, in Point Roberts.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Delta Hospital for John’s care. A celebration of John’s life was held at the Arbutus Club, Sunday, February 8. A contribution to the Point Roberts fire department would be appreciated.
