Now don’t be shy, guys,
tell ’em what you really think

by Meg Olson

The Blaine school district is putting together an informal group from the Point to work with administrators on the unique challenges faced by local students, and how to find solutions.

“We just think it’s good to involve people,” said school superintendent Mary Lynne Derrington. “All the other schools have advisory committees and this one doesn’t. We wanted another opportunity for discussion and communication. It can be a little harder to connect with Point Roberts and I think it’s one place we miss more than not.”

The committee will have ten to 12 members serving two-year terms and will be selected by Derrington and Point Roberts primary school principal Nancy Bakarich so that the group is a balanced representation of all grade levels. “We’ll be looking at K to 12 issues, not just the primary school, particularly on how they might be unique or special to Point Roberts,” Derrington said. The group is intended to advise administrators and serve as a liaison between schools and the community.

In addition to parents, the superintendent and Bakarich, the group will have community representatives who are not parents of Blaine schools students. “Everybody has an interest in schools. Everybody pays for them,” Derrington said. She added that they were hoping for a broad and creative group. “You want people who are interested in everything, not single issue people,” she said.

The committee will meet monthly during the school year except for December and June and Derrington anticipates that they will start meeting this fall. Applications are available at school offices and will be accepted until October 15. For information call 360/332-5881.
