Good
food, good health
Local nutritionist
Lori Schloss has a slow and easy approach to lifestyle change. “I
help people figure out what to do and get on a path to feeling
better,” she said. “It’s
like shining a light on a map. It’s exciting for me to
see people take care of themselves.”
Schloss
has a background in food preparation that she supplemented
with a four-year certification in nutrition consulting. For
the last 10 years she’s used
a combination of herbs and natural foods to give people the
tools to feel better. “I like
to get away from pill-taking therapy,” she said.
When
she first meets with a client Schloss talks with them about
their concerns and reviews three days of the food and drink
they’ve
consumed, looking for ways to create a healthier balance. “I
work with them right where they are, not where I want them
to be,” she said. “It’s completely up to
you and you don’t need to doe everything at once.” As
an example of using compromise rather than rules, Schloss
gave the example of a client who was adamant he wanted to
keep drinking a 12-pack of beer a day, so she made a deal
with him: “for
every beer you drink a day, have one cup of herbal tea to
replace some of the things the alcohol will strip from your
body.” After
a few days running to the bathroom her client cut back on
the tea – and the beer. “It’s about choice
and commitment,” Schloss said.
After two
to five visits Schloss said her clients usually have a program
developed they can direct themselves, though some choose to
keep seeing her on an occasional basis.
Schloss
hopes to expand her consulting work on the Point by offering
healthy cooking classes in the future. “If it doesn’t
taste good you aren’t going to eat it,” she
pointed out.
