LETTERS TO
THE EDITOR
The Editor:
If I understand Steve Diem’s reasoning, Point Roberts is
part of the United States because it is south of the 49th parallel.
Following that reasoning – Alaska, being well north of
the 49, should be part of Canada. Who’s brain dead?

The Editor:
In response to Mr. Hammell’s letter in the July issue of
the All Point Bulletin, I would like to say that he has managed
to insult every pioneer family with his remarks about fishing
and canneries and mine in particular, with his groundless accusation
of land theft.
This self admitted mutant sounds like he is one banjo short of
duel and probably considered “Deliverance” a home
movie. But all of that aside, like every other self-centered
individual he only considers himself. I’m here, I got mine,
and to hell with my neighbor.
What a wonderful addition to the community. Perhaps if our forefathers
had his outlook this letter would remain unwritten because he
wouldn’t be here, he would be blessing some other community
with his presence.
If he is really seeking peace and quiet, I would suggest he check
out the $99.95 deep hole special at Forest Lawn because deep
down he might be a nice guy! Although I doubt it. People like
him don’t understand the concept of using your own money
to preserve something you want left alone. They always want to
sponge off someone else or the government.
In closing, with missing fingers and toes, one could only wonder
what he types with or how he strums his banjo; but always being
a good neighbor, I’ve got a finger for him.

I am writing to express my gratitude for being selected as recipient
of the generous Point Roberts Dollars for Scholars Scholarship.
I received $500 from Dollars for Scholars and a $500 scholarship
from Sterling Savings Bank.
I am currently in San Francisco, enrolled in the Masters program
at the University of California San Francisco/San Francisco State
University graduate program in physical therapy. It has been
one of the most challenging times of my life, but also one of
the most rewarding.
I finished my first year with a GPA of 3.6 (an average between
the two schools) and am now participating in my first of two
full-time, six-week clinical affiliations. Our clinical affiliations
are where we participate in internships in physical therapy clinics
and hospitals to get practical experience in the field. In approximately
one year from now, I will graduate with my Masters degree in
physical therapy and receive my license to practice.
I will then continue at UCSF to complete my Doctoral degree in
physical therapy. I feel very fortunate that I have been given
the opportunity to pursue a career in physical therapy and grateful
that I will soon be making a real difference in people’s
lives. Thank you again for the scholarship award and I look forward
to seeing you all again soon.

Special thanks to the Point Roberts volunteer fire department
and ambulance service for attending so promptly to our call
for help on Thursday, July 21 at 4 p.m.
Because of a great gust of wind from the ocean’s incoming
tide our garage door suddenly decided to close and fall on me,
causing a great gash on my head.
Nothing to do in a worrisome situation but call our faithful
friends at 911.
I was transported to Delta Hospital where I received wonderful
care and attention, plus 32 staples.
We are so fortunate to have help when needed. Many special thanks
to our Point Roberts volunteers.

The Editor:
After sounding off on Ronnie Calder & the land rapers in
my last iconoclastic missile, numerous people, total strangers
in fact, came up to me on the street and in passing conversations
all over the Point to thank me. While this was gratifying, and
while several of them wondered what I’d do for an encore,
I just thought I’d mention that I’ve got bigger fish
to fry than to waste any more time jousting with the local detritus.
If anyone happened to miss me on Coast to Coast AM with George
Noory, I was in rare form on that show and you can catch the
archive on the web from July 13 at www.coasttocoastam.com/shows/2005/07/13.html
where I shredded the psychopath in chief, Congress, hurled thinly
veiled insults at the lying pack of scoundrels running the pharma
dominated vitamin trade associations, and generally had a great
time raising hell on the airwaves before a listening audience
of millions.
Moreover, you can also catch me in a documentary film titled “We
Become Silent” www.welltv.com that was narrated by Dame
Judi Dench, the famous British actress. This documentary was
made by Kevin Miller, winner of the gold medal at the NY Film
Festival in ’94 for a previous film titled “Let Truth
Be the Bias” which featured James Earl Jones as narrator.
We Become Silent was made in an effort to shed light on the Codex
international threat to health freedom: to defend consumer access
to dietary supplements worldwide; to kill the Central American
Free Trade Agreement, which is necessary to keep the free trade
area of the Americas from being shoved down our throats.
As things stand the CAFTA vote is too close to call, but people
on the Point had better ponder its implications – otherwise
via FTAA we could get merged with our commie neighbor to the
north via a hemispheric equivalent to the European Union. Much
as I hate the eternal rectum sniffing bureaucrats from hell at
the border, I’m still glad it’s there, even though
my huge mouth has got me permanently banned from ever having
a NEXUS pass for life.
A woman once said to Winston Churchill “You’re Drunk!” To
which he replied “Madam, you’re crazy, I’ll
be sober in the morning, you’ll be crazy the rest of your
life!” (Pub. Note: Churchill’s actual reply was, “Yes,
I am drunk, but you are ugly, and in the morning I will be sober.”)
If you want to add yourself to the email distribution list to receive more
of my diatribes, learn how to live free in an unfree world, and piss on the
government with impunity, sign up at www.iahf.com and the local land rapers
be damned!

The Editor:
After the tsunami in Indonesia last December, many of us wondered
what the potential is of such a thing happening in our area
and what the impact would be. The Pacific Northwest is blessed
with an incredible landscape, but with it comes the eventuality
of a major earthquake and/or tsunami. As much as we don’t
like to think about it, we are at risk here and the consequences
could be profound. In fact, Point Roberts is at special risk.
Most of us are here because we love the peaceful isolation of
Point Roberts. Unfortunately, in the event of a disaster, this
leaves us vulnerable. We have a volunteer fire department and
understandably, in the event of a disaster they will need to
care for their own families and homes. We have, at the most,
two Whatcom County sheriffs on duty. We are served by the Mt.
Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross but if the disaster is
large scale, they will not be able to get to us in time, if at
all. We may hope to be assisted by Canada, but if they are also
impacted their first priority will be caring for their own citizens.
The Red Cross and other disaster services recommend that every
household be prepared to sustain itself for three days in the
event of a disaster. The three-day estimate is woefully inadequate
for our situation because it would most likely take much longer
for help to reach us.
We, as a community, need to be more prepared than most because
of our location and isolation. At this time, Point Roberts has
no plan in place in the event of such an emergency. This has
to change. A group of local residents has formed the Point Roberts
Emergency Preparedness group (PREP). PREP is working with the
fire department, local law enforcement, the Aydon Wellness Clinic
and the American Red Cross to create a comprehensive emergency
preparedness plan for Point Roberts. Once the plan is in place
we will make it our mission to educate and inform all of the
residents of Point Roberts, so that if something were to happen,
everyone would know where to go, what to do, how to be prepared
and what they can do to help.
Please join us 6 p.m., Wednesday, August 17 at the community
center for the PREP dinner party hosted by the American Red Cross.
They will demonstrate how they cook for a large crowd in a shelter
situation by feeding us a delicious meal. There will also be
an educational presentation to help us better understand how
to prepare ourselves.
Please RSVP me at 945-2874 so they can calculate food preparation
amounts and printed materials. It will be educational, fun, and
a free dinner!
