Canfield
honored by TELUS
Local resident
Brian Canfield has had a mighty large building named after
him.
On June
27 Canadian telecommunications company TELUS announced its
building at 3777 Kingsway on the border between Burnaby and
Vancouver B.C. would bear Canfield’s name in honor of
his contributions to the industry during his 49-year career
with TELUS, formerly B.C. Tel.
“What
we are achieving today has been made possible by leaders like
Brian who have come before us. These people have built the
legacy that they now bestow upon us,” said Darren
Entwistle, TELUS president and CEO. “To illustrate,
TELUS has grown from annual revenues of $37 million in the
first year of Brian’s tenure with our company to almost
$8 billion per year today. Significant business growth comes
from taking considered risks and Brian epitomizes courageous
leadership in making crucial decisions that continue to have
profound impacts on TELUS’ advancement in our ever
changing industry.”
Today Canfield
is chairman of the TELUS board of directors but he started
as a B.C. Tel apprentice installer in 1956 and moved up the
ranks to become president and chief operating officer in 1989.
When he retired in 1997 he remained chairman of B.C. Tel, overseeing
that company’s
merger with TELUS in Alberta and taking over chairmanship
of the new corporation.
Since moving
to the Point in the late 1980s, Canfield has been active in
local efforts to provide healthcare and services for seniors
as a member of the Point Roberts Pioneers. He was a driving
force in the establishment of the Point Roberts Aydon Wellness
Clinic and serves today as president of the Wellness Clinic
board, a position he will hold until the new hospital district
takes over.
