LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The Editor:
The Point Roberts Firefighters Association would like to thank Max and the staff of South Beach House Restaurant for hosting a fundraiser for the association. On the evening of November 5 approximately 70 people joined Max, his staff and seven firefighters to enjoy a delicious buffet dinner. Half the proceeds of the evening have been donated to the Firefighters Association. We sincerely thank all those in attendance for their support.
I would also like to thank Chris Beveridge and the golfers of Waters Plat and Crystal Water Beach for their generous donation to the fire district and the Firefighters Association. Earlier this year they held a charity golf tournament and decided that the fire district would be a worthwhile organization to donate to. Their consideration and generosity is greatly appreciated.

The Editor:
Thanks to everyone for supporting the Blue Heron community van. Jim Linde, Cheryl Fitzgerald and Henry Rosenthal have done an incredible job of keeping this community service alive. They have each made personal sacrifices to make it work and it is now time for others to help out.
As we transition into a new phase, there are a few things everyone should know. The WTA provides the van, pays for the gas, the scheduled maintenance and the scheduling phone number 945-2844. They do not pay drivers for the administration of the van. Over 90 percent of the WTA’s revenue comes from sales tax. They do not receive any gas tax or property tax revenues.
We are working with the WTA to try to keep the van for the next one to three years. Doing so will take the efforts of a lot of volunteers here on the Point. We need more drivers. If you are able to help by driving a scheduled run at least once per month, please call 945-2844. We also need funds for advertising, schedule printing, a cell phone for the van and other administrative expenses. The WTA rules prohibit us from asking individual riders for contributions.
A fundraising raffle will be held on December 17 from 7 – 8 p.m. at the community center. Tickets will be available for $2 at the International Marketplace Saturdays November 26, December 3 and 10; the craft fair on December 10; the Blue Heron Gallery or by calling 945-2844. Included among the raffle prizes is a new Apple 30GB video iPod.
Please be patient with us as we learn how to make this service the best it can be.
