INSIDE
A worthy
group of award recipients
By Davea Fisher
Award’s
Night for Point Roberts students was a joyful event as Dollars
for Scholars awarded 15 scholarships to assist with the cost
of college tuition. Graduating high school seniors, Lisa Wierzbicki
and Tiffany Oakley, each received $1,000 scholarships, while
continuing college students, Jennifer Jackson, Wes Hubbard,
Neal Teutsch, Rhyan Lopez, Carly Hubbard and Tessa Cogman,
each received $500 scholarships. In addition, the adult returning
to school category was proud to acknowledge Mia Meszaros with
a $500 scholarship.
Dollars
for Scholars added a new $500 scholarship this year, the sports
award, which was presented to Rhyan Lopez by Kelly Kiniski
for his strength, self-discipline and determination to succeed
in both the academic and athletic world.
Dollars
for Scholars is proud of the generosity demonstrated by our
community and grateful to the individuals and businesses that
support our students. This year there were five additional
$500 scholarships. Julia Carlson presented the Sterling Savings
Bank Scholarship to Jennifer Jackson, Henri Wendel presented
the Delta Cable Vision Scholarship to Tessa Cogman and Jay
Lewis gave the International Marketplace Scholarship to Lisa
Wierzbicki. The Evergreen Award, given by an anonymous donor
to a student working toward a degree in engineering, was awarded
to Wes Hubbard. The David Ashton Award, given by Sally Roberts
in memory of her husband, was awarded to Tiffany Oakley, a
student planning to major in business. John Fisher presented
the Friends of the Library awards, $100 book certificates to
the university bookstores of the graduating seniors, Tiffany
and Lisa.
Award’s Night is always a happy occasion as
the audience of parents, grandparents and friends listen to
the presenters praise the achievements of the students. This
year was a milestone, as it marks five years of awarding scholarships
amounting to almost $45,000. ($44,713.50 to be exact.) We have
much to be proud of in Point Roberts, and the ability and enthusiasm
of our students is among them. Our future is in our
children.
