Sheriff's Reports

OPINION

By Jerry Gay

Every time I pass through the magical gates to Point Roberts I find myself lost in a maze of nonconformity and helter skelter permissiveness that makes even the most causal observer take notice. I sense the 60s somehow became stuck on constant replay on our state’s northern most landmark’s time machine. These residents have found ways they can still belong to the system without being taken over with formality or guidelines. Neither are they done in by the false news stories that can be circulated amongst the folks who still believe in “the organization” and its infallibility.

Down every street, road or unpaved lane you will see signs of this outcry to be different and yet accepted by everyone. The individuality it takes to creatively follow unique self-esteem can lead to excessively resourceful thinking at times. Displays of “old glory” on store fronts, window decals, lapel pins, t-shirts and even tooth picks on various cheese appetizers and assorted July 4th pastries is just one marketing hallmark of our nation. This Point Roberts resident chose to run the flag up their roadside shrubbery instead and declare themselves proud citizens of the real Bush Country.

When we reach out and embrace our neighbors we see pictures that enhance everyday life in our own international community.
