All are welcome at chamber AGM!

By Emily Smith

The Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce (PRCC) is facing big changes. Long-time president Terrie LaPorte is stepping down. Terrie and Keith LaPorte have sold their business, Maple Meadows Bed and Breakfast and Terrie no longer qualifies for a position on the board of directors as per chamber bylaws. The chamber thanks her for her ceaseless energy and abundant dedication during her term as president, and wishes her well in the adventures to come.

In addition to Terrie, directors Helena Furno, Mark Millman, Byron Velasquez and Angel Vredenburg will relinquish their positions on the board due to commitment conflicts, time restraints and end of term. Their absence leaves directors Heather McPhee and Emily Smith. The enthusiasm for the projects the chamber supports has not waned among the remaining directors.

What Does Your Chamber
of Commerce Do for You?

The monthly PRCC luncheons provide informative guest speakers, and allows neighbors and business people to meet and network. Other PRCC events are the annual Spring Social and the annual general meeting in November. On behalf of local business the PRCC advertises Point Roberts in publications like the Georgia Straight and area visitors guides and provides bond memberships to facilitate the bringing of goods and services across the border that require customs clearance. These events and services would be missed if they were no longer available, but there are other community-wide projects that benefit more than local business. The PRCC organizes the Fourth of July parade and runs the tourist information booth. Through the website, PointRobertsChamber.com, and their phone line, 945-2313, the chamber provides information and answers questions for community members, new and existing businesses and people interested in visiting or relocating to Point Roberts; it acts as a central informational resource. It also awards a $500 scholarship each year to a local graduating senior. Other projects the chamber has been a part of have included the Lighthouse Park webcam, which is on KVOS every morning, the skate park, the golf course, the potential future lighthouse, to name a few. The PRCC is working hard for you to make Point Roberts a better place to live, work and play.

What Can You Do for Your
Chamber of Commerce?

The chamber needs your support. It is an exciting time for Point Roberts. The 2010 Winter Olympics lie in our future; the tourist trade in our area, already at an increase, will only benefit.

The community needs the chamber of commerce to make the best of the opportunities ahead, while maintaining the quality of life we enjoy on the Point. We need new members and current members to step forward for the vacant positions on the board of directors. Please join the chamber of commerce for their annual general meeting on November 8 at the Dockside Café. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. There will be a short meeting, and then food and fun. All are welcome. Come show your support and enjoy an evening with your neighbors. Please RSVP to info@Point RobertsChamber.com or 945-2313.
