At the very
end of a long drive down APA Road lies the Point Roberts cemetery.
This well maintained final resting place for many nationalities
was created in 1915. Many plots are informal with plastic animals,
vases and memorabilia adorning the grave sites. Several places
have benches for visitors to sit and remember days past with
the dearly departed souls whose remains are resting below.
There are also formal designations with fences of all kinds
to mark a certain family’s boundary
while others seem to just flow freely on the grassy knolls.
Often
the grave sites seem to reflect the manner in which the occupants
lived their lives on the Point and elsewhere. Some areas
have a definite attitude or ambiance. We believe the ‘chain
of life to be unbroken’ because of continuing earth family
ties and the eternal life concept that we hope for ourselves
and others. In the end, we will be remembered for our actions
and deeds during our lifetime, no matter how long it was. I feel
the greatest reward at the conclusion of our life is giving hope
and inspiration to others and have a few say, ‘he was a
good man.’
When
we reach out and embrace our neighbors we see pictures that
enhance everyday life in our own international community.
