Chances are you drive past this tree every day just off the corner of Benson Road and Tyee Drive. As its leaves turn in the fall it shines like a torch. The giant is a pear tree, planted next to the old Samuelson home. While the house is on its last legs the heritage tree still drops hundreds of miniature pears in the fall and looks ready to blaze its way into winter well into the next century.Photo by Meg Olson

Student arrested for threatening note
The city of Blaine made headlines across the nation and worldwide this week as a 15-year-old Blaine high school student was arrested Wednesday, October 26 on suspicion of distributing a note threatening to kill 12 other students and Dan Newell, the school principal.
Blue Heron Express rolls on – for now
The Point Roberts Blue Heron Express is still alive, but users of the community van will need to build a compelling argument the Point needs the program if they plan to hold on to it next year.
