New daycare center opens up

By Meg Olson

Tera Herting is enjoying being a mom so much she wants to share it. “I just really get a kick out of it,” she said.

On September 1 Herting opened a new state-licensed daycare facility in her Benson Road home where she can now welcome up to six children at a time. “Once I fill up I can hire more people and take more kids,” she said. “My goal is eventually for me and my mother to do this as a team”

Herting used to work in elder care and decided to transfer her nurturing to young children when her son Evan was born two years ago. After meeting state training requirements Herting worked in a Bellingham daycare and decided to open Tera’s Little Stars In-Home Childcare when she moved to Point Roberts in March.

“I love children and I love being home to raise my son,” said Herting, who is expecting another child in December. As she gets regular children in her program she’s planning to have daily activities including art and music all based on a weekly theme, from insects to the seasons. She has also added a secure outdoor play area for a daily dose of fresh air.

Tera’s Little Stars In-Home Childcare is open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will welcome children from newborns to 11-year-olds. Call 945-0830 for more information.
