INSIDE

So much for all four lanes being open, eh?

The local U.S. port of entry is short-staffed after a spate of resignations and a rumored dismissal.

“We have lost a few officers and we are trying to replace them,” said Blaine area Customs and Border Protection port director Peg Fearon. She declined to say how many had left and also would not discuss personnel matters such as the possible termination of an inspector. “I have no control over someone quitting their job,” she said.

Fearon acknowledged the busy summer season was not the best time to have officers leave, and said her agency now had new employees in training destined to join the Point Roberts port. In the meantime she said travelers should feel little impact. “I’ve got other part-time people that I’ll move from here over there to take up any slack,” she said.
