AROUND THE POINT

Don’t miss this fundraiser for Marti Watson!
Donations have been pouring in for a silent auction benefit to help a local woman recover from back to back medical crises.
Marti Watson had only recently returned home after two weeks in the hospital battling a rare disease, when she slipped on an icy porch and injured her head. After a long surgery Marti is making what her doctor has described as a “miraculous recovery,” but the road back to health is likely to be long and costly. The Watsons have no medical insurance.
Friends set up a trust fund and organized a benefit at the Reef Tavern for January 29 starting at 6 p.m. There will be food and music, door prizes and a silent auction with over 50 donated items. “It’s been unbelievable,” said organizer Paulette Ladner of the volume and quality of donated items. Prizes include vacation packages, artwork, jewelry, clothing, furniture and specialty foods.

Yeah? Kiss this salmon!
Three local kids are organizing a fundraiser to benefit victims of the December 26 earthquake and tsunami off Indonesia. Joren, 9, Tavin,7, and Iver,5 Jackson, as the Tsunami Relief Trio, are planning a “kiss the salmon” fundraising event asking local business people to kiss a salmon if they get the most “donation votes”. Signed up so far are garbage guru Arthur Wilkowski, grocery store kingpin Jay Lewis, and building center baron Lorne Nielson.
“We thought that we needed to have a part in helping these victims and we hadn’t done anything,” Jackson said. Funds will be donated to UNICEF.
The trio got the idea for the fundraiser when they heard about a similar event involving pig-kissing. “We decided to do a kiss the salmon because it fit the Point,” Joren said.
The trio will hit the school, local businesses and homes collecting votes in the form of money donations. There will be a donation/voting box at the International Marketplace. Whoever wins the most votes gets the privilege of kissing a Northwest symbol and getting their picture in the paper doing it.
For more info, call the trio at 945-1944.

Knock ’em dead, John
John Lesow has been appointed by county council to replace Bob Weisen as the district three representative on the county planning commission.
On December 7 Lesow beat out five other candidates for the seat, telling council members he wanted to ensure the unincorporated areas of the county had the voice of someone who actually lived in such an area. “I was very pleased and honored,” Lesow said of his appointment, adding he was not aware of any other Point Roberts residents who had served on the planning commission, “at least not since I’ve been here.”
Lesow said that rapid growth in both the lower mainland and the county would present challenges he looks forward to tackling as a planning commissioner. “There are a lot of important issues coming up,” he said.
Specifically in Point Roberts Lesow said two comprehensive plan amendments being introduced to council this year would increase the amount of commercial land on and near Gulf Road. “That’s going to be in terms of the center of Point Roberts and how it’s going to develop,” he said.
Lesow has previously served as a Point Roberts water commissioner and held a seat on the county Sewage Control Appeals Board. He has been a frequent letter writer to the All Point Bulletin. He said as a planning commissioner he would try and follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Bob Weisen who served out his term. “He was very independent and straightforward, always spoke his mind and wasn’t always popular for that, but I admired it,” he said. “I’ve got big shoes to fill.”
