Congratulations and good luck!

Melina Coe
Melina is one of several graduates this year that have spent all their school years in the Blaine school district, starting at Point Roberts Primary and graduating in June from Blaine high school. “I enjoyed my time at Blaine,” she said, and drew her inspiration for her next educational step from a geology and marine biology class offered this year. “That was my favorite,” she said. In the fall Melina will attend Bellingham Technical College’s fish hatchery program. “I think it’s a good first step towards becoming an ecologist,” she said.

Garon Gibbs
Garon has lived in Point Roberts “since forever.” He also has been with the Blaine school district since kindergarten and “thought it was a good education.” His only plan for the future at this time is a change of location. He will be moving to British Columbia after graduation and will “take a year off, kind of play it by ear.”

Kristina Hammer
Kristina was active in volleyball, softball and an honor society member during her years at Blaine high school. A Point Roberts native, she also started at the Point Roberts school and then moved to Blaine. “We were all different from the other kids at first and we were our own group for a while then we made Blaine friends,” she said of the transition. In the fall Kristina will attend Washington State University at Pullman to study nursing. “I want to help people,” she said. “Simple, really.”

Katherine Yorke
Katherine came to Blaine schools in seventh grade, spending her early education at Pebble Hill Elementary in Tsawwassen. “I liked the U.S. school better,” she said. “It has more books, more computers, better supplies.” In Blaine Katherine was active in softball and track and spent two years with the honor society. In January Katherine joined the U.S. Marine Corps and in August she will ship out for boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. After boot camp she’ll specialize in aviation mechanics. “My dad was a mechanic for Canadian Airlines and he would take me in there and look at all the engines and I loved it,” she said.

Kaitlyn O’Neill
Kaitlyn came to Point Roberts from Denver, Colorado at 12-years-old. After starting at Blaine elementary she spent 7th through 9th grade at Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen and came back to Blaine schools for her last three years of high school. After graduation she will take six months off to travel, starting in Thailand. “I’m going to roam around a little,” she said. When she returns Kaitlyn plans to attend the National Personal Training Institute in Seattle with the goal of becoming a personal fitness trainer. “I’ve always liked working out and I think it’s important to be in good shape,” she said.

Other graduates, Brandon Baker, Travis Irwin and Kevin Teng were not available for interviews.
Congratulations to all!
