Time
to register for kids summer program
Wesley
Hubbard will be leading all of the parks summer programs this
year. A summer employee at Lighthouse Park who led the kayak
program last year, said that program is unlikely to see any
changes, but the summer children’s program might lean
more towards sports and outdoor activities. “It’s
just getting fleshed out now,” said Hubbard, recently
home from college.
The summer
program is split into two age groups six to eight-year-olds
and nine to 12-year-olds. While participation is free pre-registration
is necessary and will be held June 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The program runs Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from July
10 to August 2.
The kayak program has two components: the Sea Otter paddling
club for teens 13 to 17-years-old, and a less structured training
and equipment loan program for adults. Sign-up for the program
is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 3 at the community center. Hubbard
said the parks board has approved instructor training for him
so he will be able to provide the eight-hour training in boat
handling, equipment care and safety required of all participants.
Once they
have completed training adult participants may use the kayaks
any time the teen group is not using them, and the Sea Otters
participate in guided paddles. Participation in the adult program
is $50 and $25 for the Sea Otters.
