Where
there are rats, there are cats
By Meg Olson
Point Roberts
has a big feral (wild) cat problem. Some of the cats are homeless
pets and other have been born “in the
wild” and truly are feral. One of the major concerns is
the health of these cats.
With the
help of a few devoted individuals on the Point, the Tsawwassen
Animal Hospital with its Delta Homeless Animal Fund has been
spaying and neutering these feral cats and then re-releasing
them where they were caught or finding them new homes if they
are adoptable. The fund has been in place for just over four
years and it relies on the good-hearted clients at the hospital
to donate money. The Tsawwassen Animal Hospital donates the
surgical and medical care for these animals; the fund covers
costs for medications and supplies.
Over the
last few months Tsawwassen Animal Hospital has been getting
unhealthy kittens from Point Roberts. This means an even greater
cost for the Delta Homeless Animal Fund. The kittens need to
be isolated and medicated for weeks. Dr. Gemeinhardt, owner
of Tsawwassen Animal Hospital says “Our goal for
Point Roberts is to achieve a stable, healthy population
of feral cats and to help control overpopulation and illness
through spaying, neutering and when possible, adoption.”
The
Tsawwassen Animal Hospital loves helping these animals but
the fund is at an all time low. We are asking the residents
and businesses of Point Roberts to help out the Delta Homeless
Animal Fund by donating money to this fine cause. The Tsawwassen
Animal Hospital has a donation box on the counter or you can
mail them a check (Canadian bank) at unit 1-1835 56th Street
Delta, BC V4L 2B4.
