Principal’s Corner
by Nancy Bakarich

Happy Fall!! What a great start to our 2006-2007 school year. It was great seeing so many at our Open House and welcoming Mr. Spanjer, our new superintendent. Our students are growing in all areas and have already been doing amazing things. I always look forward to my visits to Point Roberts and seeing all those smiling faces.

I appreciate everyone’s continued support this year and I am looking forward to working as a team to continue our student’s successes. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me at 360/332-1300 or 360/945-2223, or e-mail: nbakarich@blaine.k12.wa.us

Thank you and have a great fall.

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade
by Rita Worth, Teacher

Children returned to school with stories of their summer adventures. During this long hot summer they told of vacationing in Idaho, Christina Lake, Oosoyos, Orcas Island, and the PNE in Vancouver. I added my memories of seeing Italian volcanoes and sunflower fields. We were all happy to see familiar faces and welcome new ones.

We greeted our kindergarten class and new students, Brandi, in second grade, Tyler in first grade, and Kelyse and Allison in kindergarten, with delight. These new ones came with smiles and enthusiasm. In a small school family of 14 students, everyone is somewhat like a sibling, different in personality and temperament yet from the same small, unique community.

Primary teachers from our district prepared for a new year with a visit from a math specialist. Her emphasis was on number sense, meaning less rote number counting and more understanding of “what makes.” For instance, we will still count by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s, etc., but give “one more, one less, ten more, ten less, etc.” extra attention. The refresher course was helpful and a reminder that educational techniques come full circle every decade or so.

At the beginning of our new school year, we had the pleasure of meeting our new school superintendent, Mr. Spanjer. He was very interested in our beautiful building and enjoyed taking the time to meet our first and second grade students. Mr. Spanjer’s return to our open house with our principal, Ms. Bakarich was enjoyable for both students and parents alike.
